OpenInfreno

An Open Source Root War Engine

Project's Name: Infreno -- Latin -- to put on a bridle, furnish with a bridle, bridle, harness, curb, to break in.

We feel this word appropriately names our project for two reasons: First, we are attempting to create a network of victims, which allow hackers to break in, while attempting to create a score server to record and score their actions, and second, when read quickly, it looks like the project is named OpenInferno...

Project's Goals: To provide an easy to use, fun, and reliable open sourced game engine and tools for use in Root Wars competitions.

Project's Origin: This project is based off of the ideas used for the Toorcon V (2003) version of the Root Wars game server, developed by several employees of SAIC. Most of the code for that system was junked and a new code was developed to run our Open-Sourced game engine.

License: The entire project is being released to the public under both the BSD License Agreement and the GPL Agreement. You are free to distribute the code, and use it in other projects so long as you comply with either the BSD License or GPL. (In some cases, the GPL will be the only license you can distribute some of the code under since it uses GPL code, but these are flagged in the source.)

Current Software Status and Compatibility/Planned Changes/TODOs:

Project Comms: There are currently three methods of communicating with the project developers: openinfreno-users@lists.sf.net, the Source Forge forums, or via silc (secure internet live chat, which requires a SILC client such as gaim w/Silc plugin, colloquy, or silc-client): #oi-users@silc.tilderoot.com. You might catch us live on SILC, but even if you don't, we are usually around from time to time.

News:
Our "Latest Release" usually lags far behind the CVS tree. Please use the CVS tree whenever possible to get current code. (1 JAN 2005)
Please use the unstable code branch at the moment as the stable branch is not yet populated. (1 JAN 2005).
